Mother's Day Gift Idea #2: Personalised Fridge Magnet
Looking for another heartfelt Mother's Day gift idea? How about a personalised fridge magnet crafted with a laser cutter/engraver? And, let's take this gift to the next level for that special mum in your life by adding a personalised message.
Imagine every time Mum reaches for her favourite snack or grabs the grocery list from the fridge, she’s reminded of your thoughtfulness and appreciation with a personalised fridge magnet made especially for her. And, it can be in the form of a heartfelt quote, a cherished family photo, or a simple (yet genuine) 'I love you.’
Let's dive into how you can create this one-of-a-kind gift that Mum will treasure for years to come.
For this project, I utilised my Xtool M1 laser machine to cut and engrave wood. While both the Xtool F1 and M1 have the same 10W diode laser power, the M1's larger workspace easily accommodates A4-size basswood, allowing for cutting multiple layers assembled into a fridge magnet.

Here are the materials used to create a fridge magnet:
- 2mm plywood/basswood
- Magnet
- Glue
- Paint pens or acrylic paint
Now, let’s transform the wood sheet into a mother’s day present:
1. Launch the Xtool Creative Design app and ensure the Xtool M1 laser is powered on and connected to your laptop/computer.
2. Create a custom design or upload a pre-existing design to the Xtool Creative Design app. For this project, I used a purchased file from Etsy.
3. Adjust the design size and configure the cutting/engraving settings within the app.
Design size: 90mm (H) x 68mm (W)
Engraving setting:
- Power: 65%
- Speed: 80
- Pass: 1
- Line per cm: 220
Cutting setting:
- Power: 100%
- Speed: 8
- Pass: 1
Note: For precise alignment, utilise the 'frame' feature of the Xtool M1 laser to centre your design and ensure it fits perfectly within the wood sheet surface.
4. Begin the laser cutting/engraving process.
Note: Remember to activate the air-assist feature to minimise burn marks on the wood.
5. Once the cutting/engraving is complete, carefully remove the cut wood pieces from the sheet.
6. Assemble the (wood) pieces using 3M double-sided tape, ensuring a secure hold. Then, attach a magnet to the back using glue to transform your creation into a functional and decorative fridge magnet.
Here’s the finished piece:

Of course, you would like your gift nicely presented when it reaches the recipient. Hence, here’s a gift packaging suggestion: slip your personalised fridge magnet into a charming cotton drawstring bag.
PS. In case you didn't know, you can use a 10W diode laser to engrave on fabric (like cotton muslin bags – tried and tested). 🙂
For this project’s gift packaging, here are the engraving settings:
- Power: 80%
- Speed: 230
- Pass: 1
- Line per cm: 240
And there you have it– a personalised picture frame fridge magnet, nestled in its own custom gift packaging, ready to make Mother's Day extra special.
