Mother's Day Gift Idea #3: Custom made Wood Rose

Flowers have long been a beloved Mother’s Day tradition. As the years go by, the creativity of adding a personalised touch to this classic gift continues to evolve and inspire. From handcrafted bouquets to custom arrangements, the possibilities are truly endless. One idea that particularly caught my eye when I first received my laser machine was the concept of creating a personalised rose made of wood.

This laser-cut wood rose was one of my earliest endeavours with the Xtool M1, sparking the idea for this Mother’s Day inspiration project. But now, I’m taking a step further by giving it its own special packaging.

As per my previous laser cutting projects, I found the design file that I used in this project from Etsy.

Here are the tools and materials I used in this project:

Xtool M1 laser machine
3mm wood sheet, acrylic paints, paint brushes, paint pens, wood oil, glue

Now, let’s create a personalised wood rose and its own packaging wood box:

1. LAUNCH THE XTOOL CREATIVE DESIGN APP AND ENSURE THE XTOOL M1 LASER IS POWERED ON AND CONNECTED TO YOUR LAPTOP/COMPUTER.

2. CREATE A CUSTOM DESIGN OR UPLOAD A PRE-EXISTING DESIGN TO THE XTOOL CREATIVE DESIGN APP. FOR THIS PROJECT, I USED A PURCHASED FILE FROM ETSY.

3. ADJUST THE DESIGN SIZE AND CONFIGURE THE CUTTING/ENGRAVING SETTINGS WITHIN THE APP.

Rose size: 170mm x 60mm
Fonts used: Seawashed Bold and Swift Script
XTOOL M1 Cutting settings:
  • Power: 100%
  • Speed: 3
  • Pass: 1
XTOOL M1 Engraving settings:
  • Power: 65%
  • Speed: 80
  • Pass: 1
  • Lines per cm: 220
XTOOL M1 Scoring settings:
  • Power: 100%
  • Speed: 50
  • Pass: 1
Packaging box size: 210mm x 84mm
Font: Montage Serif
XTOOL M1 Cutting settings:
  • Power: 100%
  • Speed: 3
  • Pass: 1
XTOOL M1 Engraving settings:
  • Power: 65%
  • Speed: 80
  • Pass: 1
  • Lines per cm: 200

4. BEGIN THE LASER CUTTING/ENGRAVING PROCESS.
NOTE: REMEMBER TO ACTIVATE THE AIR-ASSIST FEATURE TO MINIMISE BURN MARKS ON THE WOOD.

5. ONCE THE CUTTING/ENGRAVING IS COMPLETE, CAREFULLY REMOVE THE CUT WOOD PIECES FROM THE SHEET.

6. Affix the rose (wood) pieces together with glue, then build the packaging box by assembling the wood pieces.

Now, I am ready to present this personalised gift to my special mum:

After completing the wood laser cutting/engraving process, my Xtool M1 laser prompted me to clean its lens. Regular maintenance is essential for diode lasers like this one.

Overall, I'm impressed with the performance of the Xtool M1. While it's undoubtedly a hobby laser, its 10W power output proves reliable for various wood gift and home decor projects.
