Print-on-Demand on Etsy: Unavoidable Expenses
Is selling products using print-on-demand truly a zero-cost endeavour? The answer isn't a straightforward yes or no. It hinges on various factors, especially where you choose to showcase and sell your carefully crafted designs.
In my case, I’ve chosen to establish a distinctive brand presence on Etsy. This decision isn’t just about finding a platform; it’s about curating an identity and connecting with a community that values creativity and unique designs. While my products are not handmade in the traditional sense, being print-on-demand, they embody the spirit of what makes Etsy special—high-quality, bespoke items crafted with care.
So, what are the costs associated with listing print-on-demand products on Etsy?
Let’s start with unavoidable expenses on Etsy.
- Set up fee = USD 15.00 (approximately AUD 22.00)
This is a one-time fee to establish your Etsy shop. The fee is charged in the local currency of your region. - Listing fee = USD 0.20
This fee applies to each product listing on Etsy, with each listing remaining active for four months. Each listing can include multiple product variants.
I set up my Etsy business in June.
Here are the actual costs incurred:
- Set up fee = AUD 22.00
- Listing fee = AUD 11.40 (by end of the month)
- Transaction fee = 6.5% of the price
This includes the product price and any additional charges you apply for delivery (shipping) and gift wrapping services.
Please note that as I haven't had any sales yet, I am unable to provide a specific dollar amount as an example.

Are there any fees required? NONE.
However, as you’re establishing your business, I highly recommend (it's practically a must!) purchasing sample orders to ensure product quality and customer satisfaction.
With over 36 products listed on my Etsy business account, my strategy has been to purchase samples to meticulously inspect the print/embroidery quality and garment sizes.
Initially, I acquired a total of five (5) items from two Print-on-Demand (POD) companies:
- Gelato = AUD 81.45 (includes delivery fee)
- Printify = AUD 181.76 (includes delivery fee)
I was thrilled when I received the items from Printify! 🙂 Their production and delivery took just one week. However, with Gelato, only one item has arrived so far, while I'm still awaiting delivery of the other.
In my first month on Etsy, my total expenses amounted to AUD 296.61.
Moving forward, as I continue to list items on Etsy and plan to invest further in samples from Printify, I anticipate similar expenditure in July.
Opening a Seller Account on Etsy involves minimal fees, with the main expenses centred around production, packaging and creating/obtaining samples. When pricing your products, it’s important to ensure they cover these essential costs and account for your time. These initial investments set the stage for future success, even if sales haven't started yet.
Stay proactive and focused on delivering quality—it's the key to building a thriving Etsy business. Happy creating!
