How to Personalise Bathroom Door Signs: Wood, Acrylic, and Vinyl Ideas

"Where’s the bathroom again?” This common question from guests highlights a challenge in my home. Despite its small size, the similar-looking doors make it hard to differentiate between rooms. And, I’ve noticed this issue in other homes as well. 

As I’ve started decluttering, my vision for home decor has become clearer. Enter: the bathroom door sign.

Creating a custom bathroom door sign is a simple and fun way to infuse some personality into your home decor. Whether you're aiming for a quirky, elegant, or rustic vibe, a bathroom sign can set the tone and welcome guests with style.

To help you get started, I've designed three creative bathroom signs using wood, acrylic, and vinyl. We'll craft these signs using the Xtool F1 diode (blue) laser and the Cricut machine. Let's dive in and bring some personalised charm to your bathroom door!

Note: The size of each piece in this project perfectly fits within the work area of the Xtool F1 laser, making it the ideal choice for this project.

Bathroom Door Sign #1: Using wood

This bathroom door sign was made with the Xtool F1 diode (blue) laser, along with the following materials:

  • 2mm thick Plywood/basswood (for the first layer)
  • 2mm thick Plywood/basswood (for the second layer)
  • Black (spray) paint
  • Gold (acrylic) paint
  • Wood glue
  • Double-sided tape (to hang on the door)
  • Optional: Varnish
  • Optional: Painters tape

1. LAUNCH THE XTOOL CREATIVE DESIGN APP AND ENSURE THE XTOOL F1 LASER IS POWERED ON AND CONNECTED TO YOUR LAPTOP/COMPUTER.

2. CREATE A CUSTOM DESIGN OR UPLOAD A PRE-EXISTING DESIGN TO THE XTOOL CREATIVE DESIGN APP.

3. ADJUST THE DESIGN SIZE AND CONFIGURE THE CUTTING/SCORING SETTINGS WITHIN THE APP.

Round shape: 100mm x 100mm
Bathroom file: 52.35mm x 52.22mm

XTOOL F1 Cutting Settings:
Power: 100%
Speed: 5
Pass: 1

XTOOL F1 Scoring Settings:
Power: 100%
Speed: 50
Pass: 1

Tip: Cover the wood with painter's tape to prevent burn marks on wood, as the built-in air assist on the xTool F1 doesn't completely eliminate them.

4. Begin the laser cutting and SCORING process. Since my laser machine is set up indoors, make sure to turn on the smoke purifier.

5. ONCE THE CUTTING IS COMPLETE, CAREFULLY REMOVE THE CUT WOOD PIECES FROM THE SHEET.

6. Using wood glue, carefully assemble the pieces by attaching the top layer to the base layer. Ensure a secure hold.

7. SPRAY PAINT the base layer with black acrylic paint and the top layer with gold acrylic paint. Allow both layers to dry completely.

Bathroom Door Sign #2: Using Acrylic

This design yielded two types of bathroom decor: a stencil-style piece and individual cut-out pieces.

This bathroom door sign was made with the Xtool F1 diode (blue) laser, along with the following materials:

  • 2mm black acrylic sheet.
  • Double-sided tape (to stick the sign onto the door)

1. LAUNCH THE XTOOL CREATIVE DESIGN APP AND ENSURE THE XTOOL F1 LASER IS POWERED ON AND CONNECTED TO YOUR LAPTOP/COMPUTER.

2. CREATE A CUSTOM DESIGN OR UPLOAD A PRE-EXISTING DESIGN TO THE XTOOL CREATIVE DESIGN APP.

3. ADJUST THE DESIGN SIZE AND CONFIGURE THE CUTTING SETTINGS WITHIN THE APP.

5. ONCE THE CUTTING IS COMPLETE, CAREFULLY REMOVE THE CUT ACRYLIC PIECES FROM THE SHEET.

Bathroom Door Sign #3: Using Adhesive Vinyl

This bathroom door sign was made with the Cricut Maker 3 machine, along with the following materials:  

  • Black adhesive vinyl 
  • Transfer tape
  • Cutting Mat
  • Weeding tools 
  • Scraper tool
  • Scissors

1. Open Cricut Design Space. Create your artwork or upload your design file.

  • Adjust the size of your design as needed. Ensure you 'combine' and then 'weld' the elements so that all pieces of a single image stay together when preparing the cut on the mat.

2. Prepare the vinyl.

Turn on and connect the Cricut Maker 3 machine to the laptop / computer.
In Cricut Design Space, choose the material settings.

Note: coloured side up (carrier sheet down)
Mirror image: No
Blade: Standard
Material: Matte Vinyl

3. Cut the vinyl.

  • Load the cutting mat into the Cricut machine. 
  • Follow the prompts to begin cutting.
  • Once complete, unload the mat.

4. WEED THE VINYL.

Use the weeding tools to remove the excess vinyl.

5. Apply Transfer Tape to the vinyl design.

  • Cut a piece of transfer tape large enough to cover the vinyl design.
  • Place the transfer tape (sticky side down) over your vinyl.
  • Use the scraper tool to smooth out the tape and eliminate any air bubbles. 

6. Prepare the door surface.

Thoroughly clean the surface (e.g. by wiping it with alcohol) to remove any dirt or residue before applying the sign.

7. Transfer the Design to the Door.

  • Carefully peel the transfer tape off the backing sheet, ensuring the vinyl design sticks to the tape.
  • Position the transfer tape with the vinyl design on the bathroom door. 
  • Smooth the transfer tape onto the door using a scraper tool. Start from the center and work your way outward to eliminate any air bubbles.

8. Carefully remove the Transfer Tape.

Ensure that the vinyl design sticks to the door surface.
